Low Carb Diet

It seems that no matter where you go or what you do the term 'low carb diet' is somewhere. It tells you that by cutting out the carbohydrates in your diet you can lose weight fast. The truth is that this is true, however before you go swearing off potatoes and pasta for life, you should understand that there is more to the story than simply eliminating your carb intake. In fact, if you approach this lifestyle incorrectly you have the potential of causing yourself far more harm than good. Since the goal of most weight loss programs is to become healthier, it would seem kind of silly to do something that actually causes you harm.

Our body needs food. If it didn't, we wouldn't have an urge to eat. The fact is that our bodies also need carbohydrates, but they don't need them in the amount that many of us have grown accustomed to. This is actually the key to a good diet. By understanding that we still need to take in something while also realizing we need to limit it, we can make an effective program that keeps us healthy while at the same time allow us to lose weight.

So the question that begs to be asked here is, is a low carb diet a good idea? The answer is yes, but there is some complexity to this answer that needs to be discussed. First, while almost all of us can benefit from a reduction in eating carbohydrates, completely eliminating them is not the best idea. Carbohydrates perform a very important role in several of our body functions and without them, our body can eventually stop doing what it is supposed to. So yes, cutting out most of your carbs is a good idea. However, completely getting rid of carbohydrates is not such a good idea.

A good rule of thumb is to limit your carb intake down to a couple of times a week. Also it is a good idea to completely eliminate refined sugar from your diet as well. Also while you want to increase your protein intake, you should mainly stick with chicken, fish, and other white meat. Not only do these contain much less fat, but they also have several essential oils in them that are not found in most red meats. Also make sure to include as many fresh fruits and vegetables as you can. These vitamin rich foods are some of the best things for your body.

In the end, a low carb diet is a good idea, but it should be understood that low carb does not mean you are only going to eat meat. By including fruits and vegetables and the occasional complex carbohydrate, you will find that you can lose weight and still be healthy.
